Risks of an inactive lifestyle and how to change it

Who among us does not spend several hours of his day sitting or lying in his place without moving, whether at home, during work, or on transportation?  Despite the ease and ease that technological advances have brought, they have caused most people to adopt a completely inactive lifestyle, one closely related to countless health problems.

• What is meant by an inactive lifestyle?

An inactive lifestyle is characterized by long periods of sitting or lying down, with very limited physical activity, or no physical activity at all.  Studies show that staying sedentary for more than 4 hours per day increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

According to a study by the US government, an adult needs about 150 minutes of physical activity per week to avoid harm to a sedentary lifestyle.  But even with exercising daily, you should pay attention to how we spend the rest of the day.

• The factors that led to the adoption of an inactive lifestyle

 1. Increase the jobs that depend on staying in place without movement

In one study, the American Heart Association indicates that jobs that require sitting for long periods, whether they require the use of a computer or not, increased from 1950 to today by 83%, while jobs and jobs that require physical effort decreased to less than 20%.  .

 2. Increase screen time

Most people spend their free time in front of a screen, be it TV, computer, mobile, or even reading devices.  Whereas in the late 1990s the average time a person spends in front of screens, known as “screen time”, ranged between 1.5-2.5 hours, now the average time a person spends in front of a mobile screen is only about 4 hours per day.

• How to get rid of an inactive lifestyle

 1. Increase physical activity

If you are a sedentary person, it is best to gradually introduce physical activity into your day.  You can engage in any physical activity you prefer, such as walking, running or cycling.

 2. Increase your movement while at home

Try not to spend your time at home lying down all the time, even after a hard day at work.  Strive to be constantly moving around to accomplish various household tasks, such as preparing food, cleaning surfaces and floors, and washing dishes.  You can also do simple exercises while watching TV or walk around the house during the commercial breaks.  You can also park while receiving phone calls.  If you can buy gym equipment for use at home, do not hesitate.
